NORDSTERNTURM | WITH A PANORAMIC VIEW

The machine hall of the Nordsternturm, situated 60 meters above ground, is described as the most spectacular jazz venue in North Rhine-Westphalia. The winding tower is itself a testament to the industrial heritage of the Ruhr region, but it also serves as a powerful, inspiring backdrop for concerts in the FineArtJazz series featuring international artists. The exhibition “Change Is Constant” inside the tower provides information about the Nordstern site and the stages of its transformation. Following the addition of four glass floors as part of the 2010 Capital of Culture initiative, the former winding tower now stands at a height of 83 meters. It was designed in the early 1950s by industrial architect Fritz Schupp and houses impressive mining machinery from the era of coal extraction. Today, it is a listed historic building. It is the only one of its kind open to visitors. It is crowned by Markus Lüpertz’s sculpture of Hercules. A viewing platform promises a breathtaking panorama of the Ruhr region. The tower can be visited late in the evening on only a few days a year, specifically when thrilling contrasts between music, space, and light dominate the machine hall
