STADT.BAU.RAUM

Originally established in 1908 as the Oberschuir shaft of the Consolidation Coal Mine for rope transport and ventilation, this mining complex—with its neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau influences—is now owned by the City of Gelsenkirchen. The architecturally impressive machine hall is the perfect backdrop for the NEW COLOURS FESTIVAL. In 1994, the complex was restored and expanded with a new building, a cube of concrete and glass. Since then, it has operated under the name stadtbauraum and is used for a variety of events. A unique feature is the stage, which is situated on the foundation of one of the two former ventilation systems that supplied fresh air to the miners. One of these foundations is made of glass, allowing the stage area to be illuminated from below (see photo).
