NEUE ZECHE WESTERHOLT
For over a century, the Westerholt Coal Mine was a source of growth and employment in Westerholt. The history of the mine site dates back to the early 19th century. Even today, the site still bears the distinctive features of mining. In 1907, sinking work began on the new Westerholt I and II production shafts. For representational purposes, the Prussian state built magnificent Wilhelminian-style buildings of red brick with white-trimmed cornices, soffits, and curved gables. Numerous buildings and the clear layout of the original complex have been preserved to this day. Together with newer buildings, they reflect nearly a century of mining architecture.
The Neue Zeche Westerholt is opening its gates—step by step. As demolition progresses and the properties are secured, the site will once again be accessible to everyone. In a few years, the “Allee des Wandels” will run right through the heart of the Neue Zeche Westerholt. Residents, employees, and visitors can explore this new open space on foot or by bike. But the opening is already taking shape: in 2022, the “RUbug” street art festival transformed the Neue Zeche Westerholt into a hub for art. The site now hosts the Extraschicht event annually, and in 2026, it will also welcome the New Colours festival.
