SCHLOSS HORST en

A CASTLE CALLED HORST

In 2023, Horst Castle will be the main venue of the New Colours Festival with a total of five concerts. At the time of its construction in the 16th century, it was one of the largest four-winged castle complexes north of the Alps. Horst Castle is not only one of the oldest buildings in Gelsenkirchen, but also the first complete and thus also the oldest Renaissance castle in Westphalia. A farmstead already existed on the present site in the 11th century. From this, a medieval castle complex developed over the centuries, which was severely damaged twice by fire. After the second fire, the then owner and name giver Rüdiger von der Horst decided to build a new castle, which ended up as a castle in 1578 after more than 20 years of construction. Today it is a lively cultural center with many different offerings. It houses a library and an adventure museum. Concerts and other events are regularly held in the extraordinary glass hall in front of the impressive Renaissance facade.
