DIE BLECKKIRCHE – CHURCH OF CULTURES

The Bleckkirche is a historic church building in the Bismarck district. It is located in the immediate vicinity of one of Germany’s most beautiful zoos.

Johann Hermann Franz Graf von Nesselrode, lord of Grimberg Castle, had a church built in 1735, which was expanded into a Neo-Romanesque brick hall in 1888–89. The stone altar was created in 1574 for the chapel at Grimberg Castle and was moved from the castle chapel to the Bleckkirche in 1738. Also present is a crucifix bearing the coat of arms of Heinrich Knipping, Lord of Grimberg, and his wife Sybille von Nesselrode. This is one of the earliest Reformation-era altarpieces in Westphalia. The design, which is unusual for this region, is inspired by tomb designs by Cornelis Floris.

Today it serves as a “Church of Cultures” for intercultural activities such as exhibitions, concerts, theater performances, readings, and similar events.
