MATTHIAS LOIBNER [A] & LUCAS NIGGLI [CH]
In the delightful parallel world of art and music, our thinking is granted the opportunity to encounter the unexpected with the untested and thus develop the foundations that we urgently need to solve complex challenges. Just like the peacemaking competence of listening to and with one another that arises when making and listening to music. (Statement by Matthias Loibner & Lucas Niggli about the New Colours Festival)
The "Hurdy Gurdy" is also called in german language "Drehleier". But when Matthias Loibner revs up the rotating disc with the crank, this instrument is catapulted from the Middle Ages into the musical present. Sometimes it sounds almost like a keyboard, then like a guitar or a cello. Is it even possible to keep up with the rapid whirl of ideas and sounds that the Austrian creates, even with electronic aids? One person certainly can: Swiss drummer Lucas Niggli, who shares a boundless artistic curiosity with Loibner. Live, the two show how entertaining musical presence can be.
